AIS investigation survey

Where was the vessel, how was she moving, and what was the weather when the loss happened? We reconstruct the facts from AIS and weather data, so you can test a claim before anyone travels.

What you get

A written investigation report in English, in the Nansen Holt format and reviewed before issue. It can stand alone or support a damage survey.

  • Track reconstruction around the time of loss: position, speed, course and navigational status, with a chart of the track

  • Gaps in the signal: when the vessel stopped transmitting or was out of reception, and for how long

  • Comparison with the claim: does the track match the reported place, time and sequence of events, and the navigating area of the policy

  • Use over the preceding weeks: moorings, port calls and passages, which can point to private or commercial use such as charter

  • Weather at the time and place: wind and gusts, sea state, visibility and warnings in force, with tide and current where relevant

  • Conclusions: what the data shows, what it does not show, and what should be checked on site

When it helps

  • Groundings, collisions and storm damage, where position and conditions decide the cause

  • Theft and missing vessels

  • Claims where the reported time, place or use is in doubt

  • Liability disputes between two vessels

Sources and limits

We use historical AIS data from commercial providers, observations from weather stations near the position, data from national weather services and model reanalysis. Many smaller yachts carry no AIS or only a Class B transponder, and coverage near the coast can have gaps. Every report states which data was available and how reliable it is. Where data is missing, we say so rather than fill the gap.

How to instruct

Send us the vessel name, MMSI or registration, the reported time and place of the loss and your claim reference. We confirm whether data is available and quote the cost, including any data purchase, before you instruct. The report is a technical reconstruction; the decision on cover stays with you.
