How we work
One process, one report standard and one price logic, wherever the vessel lies.
From instruction to report
Instruction. You send the vessel, location, claim reference and what you need to know.
Assignment. We assign one of our affiliated surveyors in the region, confirm scope and timing, and confirm the cost to you before attendance.
Attendance. The surveyor inspects the vessel to our method, documents every finding with photographs and takes measurements where needed.
Report. The surveyor writes the report in our template. We review every report before it reaches you.
Follow-up. Questions on the report are answered. If a further attendance is needed, we arrange it.
Our affiliated surveyors
Our network is fixed, not put together case by case. Every affiliated surveyor is vetted by us before the first instruction: on professional background, with weight on hands-on boatbuilding, repair or engineering experience, and on reports they have written. A career at sea alone is not enough.
Once in the network, they work to the Nansen Holt method and report templates. That is what makes a report from the Caribbean read like one from the Baltic.
The report
Every Nansen Holt report has the same structure, so your team reads them the same way: instruction and scope, vessel particulars, circumstances, findings with photographs, cause, extent of damage, repair method, cost estimate and conclusions.
Cost estimates
Every repair estimate is itemised: labour hours and rates, materials and parts with their source, at the rates of a competent yard near the vessel. Repairs caused by the loss are kept apart from wear and pre-existing defects, betterment is shown on its own line and VAT is shown separately. Where repair may not be economical, we compare it with the insured and market value and obtain offers for the residual value. We recommend; you decide.
Independence
Our surveyors assess the vessel and nothing else. They do not quote for or carry out repairs on a vessel they have surveyed for us, and they do not buy, sell or broker the vessel, its equipment or its salvage. Conflicts of interest are declared before we assign a case. Nansen Holt is not owned by an insurer or a broker.
One case file
All written communication on a case runs through one address, claims@nansenholt.com, with the surveyor and your team in copy. Calls are confirmed in writing, so you get one complete file per case and nothing is agreed on the side. Our surveyors make no statements on cover; that decision stays with you.
Pricing
One hourly rate and one calculation method worldwide. In regions where local costs are substantially higher, a regional surcharge applies. It is named in the cost estimate, before you instruct.
