Services

We coordinate surveys on sailing and motor yachts and other small craft. Surveys are carried out on site by one of our affiliated surveyors and reported in the Nansen Holt format. Where a visit is not possible or not worth the cost, we review the case from documents or by live video.

Technical drawing of a sailing yacht with a marked hull damage and a detail view of the cracked laminate

Damage surveys

After a grounding, collision, storm, fire, water ingress or a handling incident at the yard. We establish the cause, document and preserve the evidence, assess the extent of damage and set out the repair method and its cost. For hull and machinery as well as liability claims. Technical drawing of a sailing yacht with length and draft dimensions, location pin and pre-purchase checklist

Pre-purchase surveys

For buyers of a yacht far from home. A vetted surveyor attends the vessel wherever she lies and you receive one clear report in English: condition, findings graded and photographed, estimated repair costs and, on request, a market valuation for your bank or insurer. Fixed prices by length.

Nautical chart drawing with an AIS track, wind, and the distance between the AIS position and the reported position

AIS investigation surveys

For insurers testing a claim before anyone travels. We reconstruct where the vessel was, how she was moving and what the weather was at the time of loss, and compare it with the claim. Sources and limits are stated in every report. More on AIS investigation surveys →

Diagram of photos, invoices, quotes and third-party reports being reviewed into a desktop review report

Desktop reviews and second opinions

When the vessel has already been repaired, has sunk, or the claim is too small to justify travel, we assess the damage from photos, invoices, repair quotes and the account of the incident. We also check other surveyors' reports and yard quotes for plausibility, as a second opinion for insurers, law firms and owners. Every desktop review lists the documents it is based on and states what cannot be judged without an attendance.

Drawing of a phone filming a hull, connected by live video to a surveyor at a laptop

Remote surveys

The owner or the yard holds the camera while our surveyor guides the inspection by live video and records it. Faster and cheaper than an attendance, and more reliable than photos alone: suited to smaller damage, first assessments and follow-up checks. The report states that the vessel was inspected remotely and recommends an attendance where one is needed.

Technical drawing of a motor yacht ashore in a yard cradle with three inspection stages: quote and scope checked, work inspected at stages, result confirmed before payment. Repair supervision and owner's representation by Nansen Holt.

Repair supervision and owner's representation

When a yacht is repaired or refitted at a yard abroad, a surveyor attends on behalf of the owner or the insurer: checks the quote and the agreed scope, inspects the work at set stages, records additional work and confirms the result before the final invoice is paid. Also for buyers who agreed repairs with the seller before handover. More on repair supervision →

Technical drawing of a sailing yacht with length and depth dimensions and a flag at the masthead, beside a checklist: MCA coding inspection, tonnage measurement, flag state inspection, MLC inspection, certificate issued.

MCA coding, tonnage and flag inspections

For yachts entering charter or commercial use, or changing flag: coding inspections, tonnage measurement and flag state inspections including MLC. Carried out by surveyors authorised for the code or flag concerned; we coordinate the attendance and the paperwork. More on MCA coding →

Claims handling for insurers

Your external claims department for yacht claims. We take the first notification, contact the policyholder, collect the documents, instruct a surveyor from our network, check the repair quotations line by line and give you a settlement recommendation with a figure, or settle within an agreed authority and report to you. Surveying and claims handling are kept as separate roles in every file; you keep full instruction and audit rights. More on claims handling →
